Brandt Garrison, Nick Eadie, and Kevin Merek...is Aurapool

Interview with Brandt (8-17-02)

Email address:
enkisown@hotmail.com for Brandt
axplayer@bellsouth.net for Kev
psychajazz@hotmail.com for Nick

Place of birth:
Brandt-Atlanta
Kev-Ohio
Nick-Mississippi

Current Residence:
Ft.lauderdale, and Palm Beach for Nick

how did you think of the name Aurapool?
Nick's idea....but for me it represents the coming together of minds for what we`re creating...including the audience...

how long has the band been playing together?
2 years almost, but nick and I were playing in a band called Dionysos together for a year or so. It broke off and together with Kevin`s help we formed Aurapool.

how did the 3 of you meet?
Same as above, Kevin was helping with sound for the last project, we needed someone to fill the bass end and there you go...

what inspired you to become a musician?
All the great music that I was going to see as a kid...Grateful Dead, especially....I think as a child I would bang on everything pretending it was a drum, then I grew up and could afford them... always loved rhythyms and figuring their structure drives me as a drummer....dreams...

How would you describe Aurapool's sound?
different but familiar....trippin'' soundscapes that fall into lyrical songs with a psychedelic edge

what is the first music you remember hearing as a child?
Riders on the storm....scared the shit out of me as a kid but I loved it; none the less, I grew up trying to swim through all the new wave music that was being thrown at us in the 80`s...classics like Hendrix, Floyd and Morrison got me through these times with fascination...

music artist/groups that are your biggest influence:
Ozric Tentacles, Phil Lesh and Friends, Noetics, Floyd, Grateful Dead, Eat static, System7 and GONG....

current / upcoming releases:
Dysplacia....I think the next album`s gonnah be called StraphoricEuphoric

favorites song of all time:
Sploosh!, Auyervedic, Darkstar

what you are listening to in the car these days:
OzricTentacles, mostly

where do you hope to be in 5 years?
Touring Europe and most of the continental US

how do you think music will change in the next 5 years:
I think rock is fusing with techno jazz and ethnic, mumms the word, anything goes and that`s the way music should be a creative free-for-all, expression should not be limited....

how would you assess the music scene these days:
Radio's boring...air play is about your record contract and how the companies' selling you.....art on the air only exists on underground public
radio in this country! That's sad considering our scene effects the world....
Radio and the music scene needs to project a less commercial front....

when not playing music or listening to music, I will be:
practicing Taichi or reading a good book....

what can our audience expect on Friday night?
a psychedelic sound that sure to compliment Lumonics beautiful lightscapes....hopefully a sound they've never heard before that will make
your feet move to the beat!

favorite web site:

any other comment:
hope to see every and all that read this Friday!

how did you get interested in spoken word? what was your inspiration?
I was always a fan of odd poetry, like Dr. Seuss(sp?) and.. damn, that guy who writes poetry for kids whose name I can't think of right now (Shel Silverstein?). On a cold November night, I drove up to Jacksonville to see Fishbone. Their frontman, Dr. Maddvibe, read some spoken word, and I fell in love with the rhythms, emotions, and humor expressed in one well-rehearsed package. I have a theatre and Improv Comedy background, so I just started writing, and my work was different and entertaining enough to make it onto the Delray Slam Team.

Seeing spoken word artist Saul Williams in the movie Slam was amazing? Is he one of your influences?
His work is definitely incredible, and although he may not be an influence on my work, he's definitely inspiring because he too has a theatre background. Maybe performance wise, he's got me tuned in. Yeea... that's the ticket.

name some other poets and musicians (or actors) that have influenced you.
Ohh... there's a list... Start with my heroes Andy Kaufman, Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Severn Darden - infamous to scholars of Second City. Toss in some slam from Shappy, Marc Smith, Beau Sia, and Jamal ICantRememberHisLastNameButHeWasInTheIndieFinalsAtTheSlam.

Musicians... Reel Big Fish (as they used to be), Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Fishbone, The Aquabats. I'm a silly rude boy, so anything that pushes the boundaries of entertainment and art I dig.

Ohh... let me make it longer by adding some artists... Shag, Mahfood, Chynna Cluggston-Major, Bendis and Oeming. Yea. Stick a spork in that.

how would you describe the spoken word scene in South Florida. It seems like it is a growing movement.
It seems... hmm... Okay, I'll be honest. I've been doing this for a little less than a year, but I have seen quite a bit since I started. There's not that much cultural or artistic happenings in South Florida, or at least not as far as I'm aware, so it's kinda tough to get people coming out to those sort of events. The Delray Beach slam is the only one going right now, since the West Palm Beach slam closed, though rumors about that Richard Green is starting one near Nova University. And I'm planning to start one in Hollywood with one of my improv troupes.

One thing that's seen a lot are rap poets. Or traditional literary works being performed, and not always well. South Florida is a very club hopping, shot dropping, teeny bopping short attention span group. So sometimes all words don't get people's attention. It's hard to find people willing to break boundaries and blend other art forms, or just try some weird stuff to see where it takes them because they're afraid. Chris the Imperial is one who does things differently. Andrew Procyk(sp?)is another. They try different ways of presenting the art form of spoken word, regardless if they triumph of fail. And it's the people who push the boundaries around that will eventually make It in the biz of entertainment, because they're thinking differently and doing things differently. Not to say the other people who perform won't make it. But Chris B. of the Delray Team has a poem about the mainstream that I think holds very true. You have to find what the people will accept as a medium of expression and wedge yourself in that way before trying to change what they will accept. And... wait... I think I lost the point of this...

how was the national slam event that you just attended in Minnesota? From what I heard, South Florida was well-represented with people like Slammistress Marya Summers who hosts the Slam event at Dada each Tuesday… she has hosted the Open Mic at Lumonics, too.

Marya was awesome. Well, in that she let me run around Minneapolis with no worries. She was very intent at winning, and worked us hard, but did a wonderful job of improving the whole team's performances, and in the end it was well worth it. Matt didn't get to party much, but his performances were the best I've ever seen. A lot of people were recognizing us towards the end, after winning "Most Clever" during the limerick intro competition, and having two Rapstyle poets on our team meeting up with all the others, Flacko and Jasper, who completely rocked everyone's brains.

Even Chris B. was pimping it at 60 years old. He had young women coming up to him left and right after he did his, ahem, Thong Poem. But I am happy to report that he stayed very faithful to his wife. Where as I... was an unknown. Until the 5th wheel slam, where I did my "Touch Me" piece. I was ganged up on by giddy young girls, I confused judges on how to score it, and threatened by my "target audience member." I will be doing that one Saturday. So yea, we were very well represented.

where do you hope to be in 5 years?
Through the Second City mainstage, producing my own films, in films. Ahh yes, the performer's life for me.

who are some of the guest spoken word artists that you have invited to Lumonics this Sat.?
Well, everyone from both teams. I've tried to get the word out to them, but it's been hectic since I've bounced between Minneapolis for the NPS last week, and I'm in Chicago right this moment. So hopefully Grinning Dog, Felicia, Flacko, Matt, Marya, Jasper, Chris the Imperial, and a few others that aren't coming to mind at the moment.

any other comment?
Lumonics rocks. Thanks for keeping it PLUR, and not kicking me out for my goofy dance style.

Robby, you are welcome to think of any questions and also answer them. I take no responsibility for what you may ask yourself.

Robby's Questions:

So how long have you been wearing pants?
Me? Yes. Six years.

Used to skirts?
Actually, skorts, they're really comfortable during the winter in Florida.

Diggin the retro look I see.
Yes, it's quite cheap, probably because it chafes so much. I do a lot of shopping at goodwill.

What are you looking for in a woman?
A cute, emo girl, with an urge to perform and push those boundaries, who would love to write team poems on the beach and put together our own webcomic of looooove. Oh, and she reeeeeeally has to like cuddling. ::aaaaaawwwwwwwwwwww::

Aren'
t you a little weird for a girl like that?
Weird is in the eye of the beholder.

Quick word association.
Duck, GO! Luck, Lucky, Leprechaun, Green, Grinning, Dog, Cat, Striped, Garfield, Wheat Fields, Mrs Fields Cookies, Free Cookies, Cookies and Milk, Andy Kaufman... wait... this is starting to look more and more controlled. I end the Free Word Association here!

Okay...::END TRANSMISSION::

Robby, you have left me speechless...can't wait to see what you have in store for us on Saturday!

Two Sinners - Second Thoughts

tempest2k@earthink.net
Birthplace:
My birthplace was Manhattan, New York

How long have you been living in Florida?
I've lived I Florida for the past 4 years

How long have you been at the turntables?
I've
been spinning for the past 5-6 years

What inspired you to spin?
I got tired of listining to DJ's play the same songs over and over again, DJ's stopped taking chances when they spun; they weren't letting the people taste (hear) different sounds. So I bought some tables and started fooling around in my house.

How would you describe your dj style?
My style is called HUDA KOROSU (if I tell you what it means I'd have to kill you)
b.r.:I'm afraid to ask, Tempest, don't want to miss your set...(:.

What is the first music you remember hearing as a child?
The first music I listened to as a child was Nina Simone, Marvin Gaye, to MC Lyte, just to name a few.

Djs/music artist/groups that are your biggest influence...
Goldie has been my insperation for years now, but I also dig Sugizo, Soulstice, and DJ krush.

Best event you ever attended?
The best event was "Energy," all the dj's were really layed back, not like today you have all these baby dj's crying over time slots and thinking that they are the shit; that night the dj's and the people came for the music, not to get all ate-up and sit in the corner with a pocket full of glow sticks and follow some fu**ing light.

Three favorite songs of all time:
a. Timeless (Goldie)
b. Strange Fruit (Nina Simone)
c. Moments of Pleasure (Dextrous featuring Beverly Gage)

What are you listening to in the car these days?
I listen to everything when I'm moving in my car these days, but I've been hooked on: Talib Kweli, Res, Saul Williams, Jill Scott, Dead Pres, Miles Davis, Nina Simone, and Bilal. (grown folk music)

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Well I don't like to look that far ahead, but I can say that I will have evolved into something that just can't be put into words...yet.

When not spinning or listening to music, I will be:
In front of the TV with my girl breathing easy, playing Judo, or producing music.

Jim (DJ BP) of Soulmyst (12/01)

djbrainprince@yahoo.com

* Online Music:
Mad Hatter Evil Clown
Take Me or Leave Me
In The Rain

Place of birth
Baltimore

Current Residence
Port St. Lucie, FL

how did you get your dj name?
BP stands for Brain Prince. I worked as a Purchasing Agent for a company and I ordered name tags for the company. One of the guy's was named Brian Prince. His name tag was spelled wrong when it came in as Brain Prince. I thought it sounded straight, so I used it.

what inspired you to become a d?
The main reason I started spinning is because I love to see other people getting excited because of the musical performance I was giving.

How would you describe your dj style?
My style, to me, is very musical, and intelligent. I play all forms of urban music. From abstract beats to intelligent drum and bass.I try to use my symphonic, concert and jazz training in my electronic music making for a more musically geared style.

what is the first music you remember hearing as a child?
"You dropped a bomb on me baby. You dropped a bomb on me!" Crimson and Clover, Needles and Pins.

some events you have dj-ed:

Jungle Playground, Zyberia, Be Here Now, Soulmyst, Stress, Shadows

are you affected much by the vibes of the audience, like whether people dance when you are spinning?
I feel the crowd very much. It doesn't matter how many people are there, it means a lot to me to look up and see someone bouncing to the beats I provide. If people aren't feeling me, than I will usually switch my styles up until I get a positive reaction from them.

djs/music artist/groups that are your biggest influence:

DJ Shadow, Pink Floyd, Nine Inch Nails, Marcus Intalex, Dom Roland, Photek, Omni Trio,

current and/or upcoming releases:

JJ001 will be out shortly on CD. It will contain 5 tracks from Soulmyst artists BP, IOM3, and Slight.

describe your production process on the tracks you do.
I do produce tracks. I use Reason software by Steinberg.I usually start out by laying down a beat. It is very important to me that I create all of my own loops for the beats. I don't mind using samples and loops for rhthym's or melodies, but I write all my own beats, and 90% of my rhythyms and melodies as well. So I start with the beat. Once I come up with a good 64 measure loop, I start breaking that down and slicing up the loops to create different loops with variations between every 4-8 measures. Once that is done, I work on the bassline. After the bass line comes the melody. And then I add rhythym and effects.

best event ever attended:

3 favorite songs of all time:
Something I Can Never Have - NIN
Renegade Snares - Omni Trio VIP
Remix Stem/Long Stem - DJ Shadow

what you are listening to in the car these day?:

Downtempo, hip hop, and talk radio =)

where do you hope to be in 5 years?:
I would like to have a nice place to live where I can play my music as loud as I can with a girl that cares for me the same way I care for her.

how do you think music will change in the next 5 years?
There is no way to tell how music is going to change in the future. I am sure that in 1940 nobody thought that a computer would be making the majority of the music that people listen to, so I just don't know where music is going.

when not spinning or listening to music, I will be:
Playing sports or messing around on the computer building web sites or doing graphic design.

any other comment:
Big ups to everyone who is doing what they are doing because it is what they want to do, not because they have to.Much love and respect for all of you.

Margot aka Slight (updated 8/02)

msnyder1978@yahoo.com
Place of birth:
Boston MA

Current Residence:
West Palm Beach, FL

how did you get your dj name?
Slight - as in the slight of hand - came to me while watching a special on magic, and magicians what inspired you to become a dj: I started out as a singer, and guitarist, then moving into the electronic music scene brought out a desire to entertain in a whole new way! Watching hip hop Djs in Miami was one of the most early influences and then Koncrete Jungle in NYC was what brought my interest in DNB to light! I was there from the first event when attending NYU - and knew from that moment - being a DJ and MC was my calling!!

How would you describe your dj style?
I am a vocalist and MC as well as DJ. I prefer melodic music, and ripping beats. I try to take the crowd on a journey with the beats and rhymes, as well as singing familiar hooks and originals. I use the lyrics to try to communicate what the music makes me feel, and keep the audience moving and interested.

what is the first music you remember hearing as a child?
Reggae!!! I went to a Bob Marley concert while still in the WOMB.

a few events you have dj-ed:
Biggest events - Shadows w/ Dj 3D in Miami; Immortal Summerfest in Miami. Also a regular at the Saint and Lumonics!! =)

have you ever had an out of body experience while spinning, where you went into an altered state?
Communication with the crowd is totally real. I find myself going into a sort of "zone" while performing - in which I can do no wrong. This expereince can be compared to when I was little I use to dream about flying out of my bedroom window and flying around my town. It was all so realistic that Im sure it was real.

djs/music artist/groups that are your biggest influence:
Bob Marley, No Doubt, Sublime, Tribe called Quest, Digable Planets, Adam F, Andy C, Portishead, Madonna, Nine Inch Nails, Tricky

do you produce or plan to produce your own tracks?

I currently work with Soulmyst - a 3 man group - in which we produce and also work with Dj sets. We produce drumnbass, down tempo, hip hop/triphop and some jazz & IDM. We incorporate our live music into our Dj sets using a laptop and a microphone.www.mp3.com/soulmyst

label or crew affiliation, web site:
soulmyst collaborative
http://furthurmystic.8m.com

best event you ever attended:
Endo Meca, 1995

3 favorite songs of all time:
Portishead - Woman
Nine Inch Nails - Something I Can Never Have
Rosey - Self Titled

what you are listening to in the car these days?
Hip Hop and my own mix tapes

where do you hope to be in 5 years?
A resident at a major nite club. Im also a graphic designer at a newspaper - so hopefully I'll have moved up there too =)

how do you think music will change in the next 5 years?

Drumnbass is becoming more and more main stream! I think that the beat will continue to become more important in music - sometimes even more than the lyrics. Crossover the is key. Music is changing everyday. Soon, there will be fewer genres of music and better general quality. A fusion of mind, body, and spirit in the music as well as within the scene.

when not spinning or listening to music, I will be:
working on web sites and my own original music - and writing lyrics and poetry

any other comment:

KEENAN (IOM3) from SOULMYST (2/02)

apbmailinglist@yahoo.com

Place of birth:

Atlanta

Current Residence:
Ft. Lauderdale

what inspired you to become a dj?
I consider it an act of "seva" or self-less service. If somehow I manage to make money while playing records that make people smile and dance, then so be it! Also, if you are going to produce music, you have to be able to spin as well.

How would you describe your dj style?
I guess it depends on the situation..I have alot of genres in my collection...I was just given 1500 old 45's, everything from old funk to rare rag time and honky tonk. I really enjoy playing drum n bass, but the market is flooded and the last thing this scene needs is another struggling junglist...so lately I have been playing alot of underwater hip hop and indie rock.

what is the first music you remember hearing as a child?
Phil Collins, Sade, Pink Floyd, and Elton John, and a lot of eighties music. My mother is Blondie!! not really, but she does bleach her hair :)

some events you have dj-ed:
most recent...I emceed @ Sci Fly, Spun @ Be Here Now, Soulmyst, Stress, Shadows, all of the Dustin Orlando art shows (www.objexartspace.com), Retreat into Eternity. I also played at Lord Nelson's during the Milk Inc. Indie rock days

are you affected much by the vibes of the audience?
yes, well I like to think I can feel out the crowd. I have always been able to tell what they will like and dis like. I think the audience is the reason for being in the booth to begin with, otherwise we would all still be bedroom dj's.

djs/music artist/groups that are your biggest influence:
Aesop Rock, Saul Williams, Dead can Dance, John B, the entire Warp roster, the entire Def Jux roster, David Bowie, Elton John, Radiohead, the Smiths, Jello Biafra,...and the list just goes on and on.

current/upcoming releases:
JJ001 will be out shortly on CD. It will contain 5 tracks from Soulmyst artists IOM3, BP and Slight. Also, IOM3 collaborative with Palmetto and Jasper (dark wave underwater hip hop )

describe your production process on the tracks you do.
I like to sample melodies from REALLY old and obscure records. I write all the drum patterns and lyrics (if any) I think it is a typical process...but the creativity is revealed in the finished product.

label or crew affiliation, web site:
Soulmyst, Furthurmystic Soundscapes http://furthurmystic.8m.com, IOM3

best event ever attended:
Smile 1995 in Atlanta....my first time seeing Rabbit in the Moon, I was only 15 or 16 ...I had a great time.

3 favorite songs of all time:
1) time after time : Cyndi Lauper
2) les fluer : Minnie Riperton
3) elohim: Saul Williams

what you are listening to in the car these day?
Modest Mouse, Knife hand chop, the Aeffect, AESOP ROCK!!!!!

where do you hope to be in 5 years?
Vancouver BC, growing organic tomatoes and producing post-electroni-cult classics!

how do you think music will change in the next 5 years?
Pop will eat itself and maybe just maybe people will decide to buy music with a message.

when not spinning or listening to music, I will be:
Writing, Working, Schooling. Eat Sleep, Eat Sleep

Email address:
djbside@hotmail.com

Place of birth:
New Orleans, LA

Current Residence:
Ft. Ladi-Dadi

how did you get your dj name?
Long story.... but it's more than a DJ name it personifies my entire lifestyle..... I have always been a little "off the beaten path" especially when it comes to music.

what inspired you to become a d?
My show tell record player when I was 3... I would love to manipulate the sounds via the vinyl and throw the screen off.... (LOL) Ever since then I've been a vinyl junkie

How would you describe your dj style?
Way too diverse for the mainstream, and even sometimes the underground (which isn't too far under anymore)

what is the first music you remember hearing as a child?
Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Dr. John, Otis Redding and tons of Bluegrass Jazz

some events you have dj-ed:
ULTRA 3(2k1), ADE (Amsterdam), Various WMC parties, Hip-Hop shows @ House Of Blues, Chemical Bros. (In Dallas), just to name a few memorable ones

have you ever had an out of body experience while spinning?
Yes, and I didn't do ANYTHING to induce the experience (NO DRUGS). Once I was working on an original track and Deja Vu kept occurring and the next think I knew was I saw myself in the booth from the dance floor... I was pretty strange but beautiful.

djs/music artist/groups that are your biggest influence:
Everyone who ever did their own thang.... Prince, James Brown, George Clinton The P-Funk All Stars, Funkadelic, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Craze, DJ Baby G, The Roots, The Pharcyde, De La Soul, Roni Size, Handsome Boy Modeling School, DJ Ease(N.O.W.), Armand Van Helden, Norman Cook, Curtis Mayfield, Bob Marley, etc... You know the legends (LOL)

current and/or upcoming releases:
HardCore SoundBwoy Vol.III mixed CD, plus I'm trying to get my original tracks out there (I'm currently negotiating things). I need help deciding which format to hit first (D B / Breaks / Downtempo / House) ???

do you produce or plan to produce your own tracks?
My music varies on the mood or person I am at the time. B-SIDE has so many styles so........
HardCore SoundBwoy = Drum Bass
The Funk Brigade = 2-Step Breaks
Caesar LaFon = House Soul
Abstract Vibes = Hip-Hop / Downtempo

label or crew affiliation, web site:
www.bsideproductions.com
(Core / Blessed Crew / Soulmyst / Liquid Sky / Stanton / Final Scratch)

best event you ever attended:
Attended, would be the Cure Disintegration tour w/ Camper Van Beethoven...
Participated, would be the Pharcyde show back around 96

favorite songs of all time:
Hide You (ALL Versions) - Kosheen Girl
I'll House You - Jungle Bros.
Lookin' For The Perfect Beat - Afrika Bam Soulsonic Force

what you are listening to in the car these days?
A group called NuSpirit Helsinki (Guidance Recordings), and a bunch of my mixes (trying to see which one I should release first)

where do you hope to be in 5 years?

Retired from working for OTHER people, and just enjoy life by making music and making people dance....

how do you think music will change in the next 5 years?
Well, yes, once more DJ's catch up with the technology that's out there (like Final Scratch). I'm just hoping the old days of really good DJ-ing comes back... Anybody can play the same record label all night (Yawn)! It's time to MIX things up

how would you assess the dance scene these days?
Exploited, but still promising. Everything is like a roller coaster ride there are ups downs around every turn... I just want to hang in there and be true to myself.

when not spinning or listening to music, I will be:

making music, dancing on the dance floor, looking for my soulmate, and trying not to work so hard (I'm a work-a-holic)

any other comment:

Yes, I love what you guys are doing... Years ago I helped build a stable scene in TX at an old movie theatre called the Ridglea.. 2-post hippies ran the place and did laser light shows to the DJs... It was great, and your gallery reminds me of those days Oh I also have several mixes on-line @ www.bsideproductions.com
